ROUND TABLE WORKSHOPS
approx. 2 hours
this is a great way to get together with friends, co-workers, fellow volunteers and like minded souls.  A round table workshop starts with a theme, a basket of questions that can be used to start the conversation, tools to help you understand the issues and meaningful, non-judgemental insight leading to hands on solutions that you can take home and implement where you see fit.  As the mediator, I do the research on the chosen topic, bring the necessary tools  and help keep the conversation where it needs to be.

These round table workshops usually run between 1 1/2 and 2 hours and can be hosted in your home, at your place of business and non-profit establishments.

Do you know what is in your 'natural' cleaning products?  This roundtable workshop is a little different than the others as you will be asked to bring your favourite cleaning products with you and together we will learn about them, without judgement.  I am a firm believer we all need to educate ourselves so we can make the right decisions for ourselves.  For example, I get my hair highlighted.  The products used are not organic or natural but the person who does my hair has done her research and chose the products she feels are the best to represent her and her salon.  I trust her so I trust her choices.  Not everything in our lives are going to be natural but wouldn't be awesome if we were armed with the knowledge that can help us create the safest space we can for ourselves, our loved ones and the people we work with while doing our part to be good to Mama Earth.

NATURAL - NOT NATURAL
Let's talk
deciphering labels
understanding ingredients

It's not impossible to live a life without plastic but I guess it all depends on what you are willing to give up to live with less. Take a tour of your home and look for the plastic, you will be surprised to find how much of it we actually live with. We work on it, watch it, cook with it, talk to friends with it, It's in our fridges, every small appliance and electronics piece we own. It holds our food, shampoo, soap and toothpaste. We sleep under it, wash with it, clean our homes with it, wipe our babies bottoms with it, we wear it.  The amount of plastic in our lives is out of control

Antimicrobial cleaning products (also known as disinfectants) are specifically intended to both clean surfaces and kill germs such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi. But research has shown that some of the most common antimicrobial chemicals used in cleaners could have serious health consequences, especially for women, cleaning workers, and young children. Also, the overuse of antimicrobials contributes to the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which some scientists say could leave the public with fewer tools in the fight against infectious diseases.

GREENWASHING
WHAT IS IT?
Greenwashing is where a firm spends time and money advertising and marketing their goods or services as environmentally friendly when they are not.
A FEW EXAMPLES
Dawn Antibacterial dish soap - The labels on Dawn's antibacterial dish soap feature baby seals and ducklings with the promise that "Dawn helps save wildlife." Dawn donates soap to clean up animals after oil spills and gives money to rescue groups, but the product itself contains an ingredient harmful to animals.   Organic Melt ice remover One of the key concerns around using road salt to melt ice is the damage salt does to aquatic life when it reaches rivers, streams and groundwater. Organic Melt ice remover advertises itself as being "environmentally safe" and an "agricultural-based product" with sugar beets but only contains 3% sugar beets and the rest is rock salt  Vim PowerPro Naturals The label on Vim PowerPro Naturals bathroom cleaner says 98 per cent natural ingredients. When tested by a 3rd party 1/4 of the product was found to be petroleum based chemicals.  Unilever stated, "Our 'naturally derived' claim is based on all the ingredients in the product, including … water." Let that sit for a minute...reread that line if you need to and then the next time you pick up a product and you see the 90%, 95%, 98% rethink purchasing that product

SINS OF GREENWASHING

& creating change
There is so much information out there on how to create a safe space for your newborn, what the best products to buy are, what you should or should not be concerned about when it comes to the ingredients, material, manufacturing and who you should be purchasing from.  Sometimes it can become so overwhelming.  Bringing a new human being in to your world should not be a stressful thing.
a client was hosting a baby shower for their daughter-in-law and wanted everything to be perfect including creating a registry focusing on natural/organic options for the guest to choose from based on her daughter-in-laws desire to create a safer environment for her first born.  She asked me if I had any ideas so I said 'give me a week' and I will have something for you.  That began the Bringing Home Baby workshop so that all mom to be's would have the opportunity to learn more about creating a natural nursery to provide a safe environment for their newborns.
